The New York Geographic Alliance is pleased to announce that we are planning special professional development opportunity for the summer of 2014. We call it the Waterways of New York Conference, and it will be held at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York on July 23 - 25, 2014.
The conference will have two strands, one for social studies (transportation, Erie Canal, Underground Railroad, etc.) and the other for science (water quality, environmental concerns, etc.). Teachers from all grade levels are invited to apply, and we also welcome informal educators (4-H, museum staff, etc.).
We will also offer a hands-on session using ArcGIS Online, which is free and fairly easy to use. On Thursday, we will take a field trip in the Rochester Area to look at Erie Canal locks, cobblestone houses, and to do water-testing in local streams.
The Alton Methodist Church, a great example of a classic cobblestone building.
You can apply for the Waterways of New York Conference from the link on the right side of this page. It will get you on our list, and later on we will send out more formal registration material. Online registration is now closed, but we can still accept a few more applications. Contact Tim McDonnell for more information, or call the NYGA Office at (585)-292-2398.
