Important Changes to Global History and Geography and US History

January 12, 2013
Donna Merlau, Greg Wilsey (NYSED)

"

There have been some significant changes for Scoring The Regents Examinations in Global History and Geography and United States History and Government for the January, June, and August 2013 Administrations has been posted to: http://www.p12.nysed.gov/assessment/hsgen/2013/541hg-13.pdf

Please pay close attention to some changes featured in this booklet. Please note that beginning in January 2013, teachers are no longer permitted to score their own students’ papers. To comply with this requirement, it is recommended that schools with a small number of qualified social studies raters form a consortium of teachers from several schools to score papers. (pp. 1 and 2)

Note a change is being phased in regarding the format of rating guides beginning in January 2013. This will begin with the United States History and Government rating guides. All sample student essays in this rating guide are presented in the same cursive font while preserving actual student work, including errors. This will ensure that the sample essays are easier for raters to read and use as scoring aids.

Raters should continue to disregard the quality of a student’s handwriting in scoring exam papers and focus on how well the student accomplished the task. The content specific rubric should be applied holistically in determining the level of a student’s response. (p.2) In preparation for rating any of the Regents Examinations in Global History and Geography and United States History and Government, the Information Booklet for Scoring should be carefully read and followed. Please contact us if you have questions or concerns.

Thank you for your efforts on behalf of the students of New York State.
