New Social Studies Framework and Other News

April 30, 2014
Timothy McDonnell

Yesterday, the Board of Regents adopted the New York State K-12 Social Studies Framework to provide schools and teachers with information they need to consider modifications to local social studies curriculum for students in grades K-12. The Social Studies Framework has drawn support from social studies teachers, professional organizations, and other state and national education organizations. It includes key ideas and concepts for each grade level and incorporates Common Core skills in literacy, writing, speaking and listening, as well as social studies practices.

There is a video explaining the new framework: http://www.engageny.org/resource/new-york-state-k-12-social-studies-framework-video

We also want to remind our members that you can download table size state maps, including New York, from the Map-Maker site of National Geographic Education. They are in PDF format, and they are easy to assemble into maps that your students can use. And they are free! To find these maps, visit this link.

Alison Wolin wants you to be aware of a great PD opportunity at Cornell University. It is the Upstate Health Science Symposium and Technology Showcase, and it will be held on May 6th. Registration and more information can be found at www.cctec.cornell.edu/events/healthscisymposium/2014/.
