Good Geographic Practices Workshop - Madison Oneida BOCES

The New York Geographic Alliance is partnering with the Madison-Oneida BOCES to present our Good Geographic Practices Workshop for teachers in Central New York on August 22nd. The morning session will be for elementary teachers, and the afternoon will be for Grade 7 teachers. The day will be filled with lessons meant to engage students in geographic concepts and reasoning skills. In the morning, we will demonstrate how to build mapping skills from K to Grade 6. We will use the GIANT Map of New York (17' by 21') for several lessons. We will also discuss how to use our Erie Canal Module to show how it is possible how to teach geography through ELA and Math.

In the afternoon session with middle school teachers, we will also use the GIANT Map, this time to help teach the relationship of geography to the American Revolution, especially to the Burgoyne Campaign of 1777. Our instructors will use another resource of the NYGA, the Atlas of New York: Legacies of the Erie Canal, to do several other lessons relating geography to the Social Studies Framework for Grade 7.

If you are interested in this workshop, contact Sue LeBlanc at MO BOCES. She can help you register. If you have questions about the agenda of the Good Geographic Practices workshop, contact Tim McDonnell of the New York Geographic Alliance, or call the NYGA Office at (585)-292-2398. More information will be available before the end of this school term.
