GeoFest 2016 - The POWER of Parks... and Geography!
GeoFest 2016 is just 10 days away? Are you registered? If not, you can do it online NOW from our link below!
GeoFest is our annual celebration of geography. It will be held at Monroe Community College on Saturday November 19, 2016. This event will include three workshop sessions, and introductory breakfast session, and an optional afternoon event. Our partner for GeoFest is the MCC Department of Chemistry/Geosciences. Our theme is The Power of Parks... and Geography!
We decided to hold GeoFest in November, because it several other events occur at this time. Geography Awareness Week is Nov. 13-19 and it is also International Education Week. Geospatial Day is Wed. Nov. 16th. We hope to encorporate all of them into our GeoFest program. Since this is the 100th annniversary of the National Park System, we will also include workshops about parks in New York (national, state, and local). The New York Geographic Alliance will also be highlighting our new lesson module for middle school, Geographic Lessons for the Atlas of New York.
Welcome to MCC! GeoFest 2016 will be held in Rochester on Saturday November 19th from 8:45 AM to 2:30 PM. The morning will start with a continental breakfast in the Forum (Bldg. 3) and a few announcements. Dean Dan Robertson will formally welcome our participants to the conference. We have workshops for Geography Awareness Week, Finger Lakes Gorges, Teaching with Atlas of New York, Literature for Geography, Intergrating Social Studies into the ELA Curriculum, Inspiring Geographic & Spatial Thinking, 4-H National Youth Day (Drones!), and State Park Ecosystems. There will be three workshops in the computer lab using ArcGIS Online and other resources. We are also pleased to announce that Josh Teeter, an Environmental Educator with the New York State Parks, will be our keynote speaker, just after lunch.
We will also be displaying our new GIANT Map of New York State. It measures 15 by 20 feet! For those of you interested in environmental science, our water-testing kits will be on site.
You can now register online for GeoFest. CLICK HERE! There is NO registration fee for the morning session, and it's only $5 for lunch. The complete program is also available for downloading, by clicking here.
