B-WET Upper Susquehanna Summer Institute

The New York Geographic Alliance is pleased to announce that we will be holding the B-WET Upper Susquehanna Summer Institute at the Tompkins-Seneca-Tioga BOCES in Ithaca, NY on August 4th and 5th. This professional development opportunity is sponsored by a grant from NOAA that is administered by Monroe Community College. This event is free to all teachers in the Susquehanna watershed and surrounding regions. The goal of this program is to help teachers and informal educators to effectively teacher about their local watershed... outside!

This institute will occur in two parts. The first day (Aug. 4, 2016) will be basic watershed training for teachers that have not participated in any of our workshops in the past four years. We will spend the morning doing activities showing the basics of watersheds, using topographic maps and aerial imagery, and discussing environmental issues about the Chesapeake Region from a geographic perspective. In the afternoon we will visit a nearby park on one of the tributaries of the Susquehanna to look at water quality. We will collect macro-invertebrates, do a BioBlitz, and do water-testing using our "kid-friendly" kits designed by Prof. Stephen Vermette of Buffalo State College.

Day Two (Aug. 5th) will be designed for "experienced" teachers, including those from our partner schools. We will be working in small groups helping to design a program that will work for your students in the 2016-2017 school year. Time will be spent out in the field discussing possible stewardship projects that will work in your community. We will also demonstrate how to make Story Maps on ArcGIS Online to help publicize the work you and your students will be doing as part of this program.

Since TST BOCES is our host institution, you need to register with them using this link for MyLearningPlan. You can register for either day. If you wish to participate on both days, please contact Tim McDonnell first. Your registration will be accepted, provided there is room. If you would like to download a flyer for the B-WET Upper Susquehanna Summer Institute, click here. We will issue a certificate of participation to all teachers who complete the program. You will also be eligible to borrow materials from NYGA for your watershed studies next fall. Many resources will be provided to participants with no charge, including training manuals, flash drives of lessons and digital images, and maps. Teachers who need help in covering transportation costs can be provided upon request.
